Type 4 acne, also known as nodulocystic acne, is a severe form of acne characterized by deep, painful nodules and cysts that develop beneath the skin’s surface. These lesions are larger and more inflamed than typical pimples and can cause significant discomfort and scarring. Type 4 acne often occurs in individuals with oily skin and is associated with hormonal imbalances, genetics, and sometimes, certain medications or skincare products.
One of the defining features of type 4 acne is the presence of nodules and cysts. Nodules are firm, deep-seated lumps that develop when clogged pores become infected and inflamed. Cysts, on the other hand, are pus-filled sacs that form deeper within the skin and can lead to more extensive damage if not treated promptly. These lesions can persist for weeks or even months, causing emotional distress and affecting one’s self-esteem.
Managing type 4 acne typically requires a comprehensive approach that may include prescription medications like isotretinoin, oral antibiotics, and topical treatments containing retinoids or benzoyl peroxide. Dermatologists may also perform procedures such as drainage and corticosteroid injections to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
