Bacterial acne typically appears as inflamed, red bumps on the skin, often with a white or yellowish center known as a pustule. These bumps can vary in size, from small papules to larger nodules, and they are usually tender to the touch. In some cases, bacterial acne can also form deep, painful cysts beneath the skin’s surface. These cysts often feel like hard lumps and can cause significant discomfort.
One distinguishing feature of bacterial acne is the presence of pus. When the acne lesion becomes infected with bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes, the body’s immune response triggers the production of pus, leading to the characteristic white or yellowish appearance at the center of the pustule. This pus consists of dead white blood cells, bacteria, and tissue debris, and it signifies an active infection within the acne lesion.
In addition to the physical appearance, bacterial acne may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as inflammation, redness, and tenderness in the surrounding skin. These symptoms can worsen with factors like hormonal fluctuations, excessive oil production, and improper skincare habits. Proper diagnosis and treatment by a dermatologist are crucial for managing bacterial acne effectively and preventing complications such as scarring.
