Dry skin can result from various factors, both internal and external. One common cause is a lack of moisture in the air, especially in dry climates or during winter months when indoor heating reduces humidity. This can lead to moisture evaporation from the skin, leaving it dry, tight, and sometimes flaky. Additionally, using harsh soaps or cleansers that strip the skin of its natural oils can disrupt its moisture barrier, leading to dryness.
Another factor is genetics. Some people naturally have a tendency towards dry skin due to their genetic makeup, which can affect the skin’s ability to retain moisture effectively. Hormonal changes, such as those during menopause or pregnancy, can also impact skin hydration levels. Certain medical conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or thyroid disorders can contribute to dry skin as well, as they affect the skin’s ability to produce oils and maintain moisture balance.
Lastly, lifestyle habits play a role in skin dryness. Not drinking enough water can dehydrate the body, including the skin, leading to dryness. Exposure to harsh environmental elements like sun, wind, or cold temperatures without adequate protection can also contribute to dry skin. Additionally, using hot water for showers or baths, excessive exfoliation, and not moisturizing regularly can further exacerbate dryness.
